Good to know
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units: 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
WHO categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obesity. Asian populations tend to have higher body fat at the same BMI, so Korea uses lower cut-offs (23 for pre-obese, 25 for obesity).
BMI doesn’t account for muscle mass, age or sex, and isn’t meant for children or pregnant women. Waist circumference is a useful second measure.
FAQ
What is a healthy BMI?
By WHO standards, 18.5 to 24.9. In Korea and much of Asia, 18.5 to 22.9.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not very — muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat.
Can I use it for children?
No. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles.
